From a young age, I have always been captivated by the cinematic world, and I often see myself as a devoted cinephile and a thoughtful film critic. As a graphic designer, I use movies to gain design inspiration and analyse new design trends and concepts. Thinking back to every movie I have ever seen, “The Mother” is one film I would use to relate to myself as a graphic designer. Why? It might sound funny but I see my designs as my children, they are my creations after all.
What captivates me the most about this movie is how well the filmmakers showcased maternal resilience. Being resilient is one of the characteristics I would use to describe myself as a graphic designer because I am usually able to thrive even in tough situations and adapt.

In the plot, we see famous actress Jennifer Lopez who plays the lead character (The Mother) a former US military operative who joins forces with an FBI agent to rescue her kidnapped teenage daughter.
In this critical analysis, I intend to delve into the film's objectives, strategies, and tactics, explore the impact of its emotional narrative and strategic choices, unravel the lessons learnt from this cinematic masterpiece and relate it to how it can have an impact on my professional life.
.
Objective:
In the movie "The Mother", the filmmakers' objective wasn’t just to create a film with a combination of the action, thriller and drama genres but also to engage the audience to be both emotional and excited by delving into the depth of a mother’s love and showing how far a mother can go to protect her child. Another objective was for the movie to become a trending sensation and attract a substantial viewership.

Relating this to myself, my professional objective is to be a successful brand identity designer and also to aim at captivating my audience with my designs by using all the design skills (Teamwork, Design Thinking, Iteration, collage, researching and journaling) I possess to eventually achieve fame.
Strategy:
One of the strategic approaches of director Niki Caro involves successfully blending elements of the action, drama and thriller genres to create a cinematic masterpiece. The main successful strategy utilises the mother-daughter relationship as a central emotional anchor, aiming to evoke empathy and connection from the audience. Finally, animal lovers were not left out as the filmmakers strategically used scenes of a mother wolf protecting her pups which was symbolic to further buttress the bond of a mother (Norman, 2023).

As a brand identity designer, my style of designing is usually geared towards minimalism which is simple but powerful. As a professional strategy, I wish to appeal to my audience’s emotional intelligence and create designs that resonate with them. I also intend to hone my skills in Collage and Photomanipulation to imbue symbolism in showcasing my design concepts. Finally, I wish to strategically improve on my graphic design software skills and always ensure to stay updated with design trends.

Tactic:
The movie “The Mother” was executed tactically incorporating adrenaline-pumping action sequences and moments filled with suspense giving the audience a rollercoaster of emotions.
Another tactical approach was portraying “The Mother’s” military background by highlighting her adaptability in unforeseen situations. Also, the filmmakers tactically showcased her leadership skills which regardless of her compassion, commanded respect and showed strength as the lead character. Finally, the tactical choice of casting Jennifer Lopez as the lead character, leveraging her stardom, which gives the movie a certain level of credibility and audience appeal. The last time I remember watching a movie with a mixture of action and thriller and a similar storyline from Lopez was in her 2002 movie “Enough,” but regardless, “The Mother” certainly exceeded my expectations.
Relating this to my professional life, the adrenaline-pumping action sequence translates to how I intend to execute my designs with precision and dedication. Another tactic I intend to use is being able to adapt, taking every challenging or unforeseen situation as an opportunity to grow as a designer. Also, by tactically emulating the lead character’s leadership skills, I hope to thrive as a leader in my field, balancing strength and assertiveness alongside compassion and empathy. Finally, to drive fame and credibility, I wish to tactically leverage social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc., to publicize my works.
In conclusion, "The Mother's" strategic approach was successful in delivering a gripping action-thriller. The film's impact on its audience reception is evident in its ability to deliver on its primary objective, and it is well-deserving to be one of Netflix's most-watched movies of all time, according to Business Insider. It is highly relatable to me as a graphic designer and serves as a cinematic mentor, effortlessly portraying my objectives, strategies, and tactics.
